Does care mean living in a rest home?

No, not necessarily. There are lots of varieties of aged care available to each individual, depending on their needs level.

It’s possible to benefit from short-term care like respite care, this is perfect for those who may only want support for a few hours or days. There are also opportunities for occasional support in your own home, suited around your schedule and lifestyle.

Is funding available for aged care?

It’s all dependent on your NASC (Needs Assessment Service Coordination) assessment. In some instances, respite care may be partially funded by the government through your local health authority.

Equally if your needs assessment deems an alternate level of care, you may be able to apply for the Residential Care Subsidy, or other government funding.

How do I know if my loved one needs care?

Often you will have a gut feeling that you or a loved one would benefit from care or support. However, there are some key signs you can also look out for; like if the individual is struggling to keep on top of household tasks, you notice changes in their mobility or behaviour, or maybe they’re experiencing feelings of loneliness. These are all signs they may benefit from additional care.

What is respite care?

Respite care is short-term quality support. These services offer comfort and support for anyone who’s unwell, recovering from illness, or might just need extra support for a bit.

Respite ranges from a couple of days to a few weeks. Many people find it offers a refreshing change of scene and a break from the day-to-day in a friendly, safe and nurturing environment.

What are the steps to get respite care?

First Talk to your GP, after an initial consultation they will make a referral to community support services.

The referral then goes to a care manager who prioritises the case.

They then book an appointment and assess the client for respite days, home support, and daycare.
